Undergraduate Academic Affairs (UAA) shapes, advances and stewards a world-class undergraduate academic experience for students at the University of Washington. Staff, faculty and students in UAA deepen and enrich the learning experience for all undergraduates, recognizing and supporting the unique learning path of each individual student and the commitment of each academic program to excellence in learning and teaching. Within UAA, UAA Advising provides academic planning services and support for students, including helping them explore academic opportunities and working with them to connect their personal strengths and interests with curricular (including co- and extra-curricular) experiences. UAA Advising works primarily with students who are exploring and undecided or preparing for entrance into a major. UAA Advising is a primary campus contact for prospective transfer students, working closely with the community and technical colleges in Washington State. UAA Advising is the UW's centralized advising office, providing leadership and support to advisers, departments, and student service units around the institution in the areas of academic advising practice and policy. UAA Advising works closely with First Year Programs, Academic Support Programs, and other campus partners to support advising and orientation programming along with tutoring and course support for students. UAA Advising collaborates extensively around campus, particularly with college and departmental advisers, student services offices, and key campus event organizers. Along with Academic Support Programs and the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity's Academic Counseling Services, UAA Advising is physically located at the heart of the university, within the Center for Undergraduate Advising, Diversity, and Student Success (CUADSS) at Mary Gates Hall. UAA Advising has an outstanding opportunity for a dynamic, service-oriented and student-centered individual to join our team as a Path to UW Adviser. This role will support advising and programming related to the Path to UW program which includes advising Seattle College students interested in transferring to the University of Washington, supporting summer programming for prospective and incoming Seattle Promise students, and assisting Seattle Promise students as they transition into the University of Washington. The position will also support programming related to other Washington State Community College Partnerships more broadly. We aim to build a diverse pool of experienced candidates from a range of academic and professional backgrounds. The right candidate will join a collaborative, purposeful team of professionals excited to play an instrumental role in the lives of students by helping them make informed academic choices, and supporting their experiences at the UW and beyond. Candidates for the Path to UW Adviser position must exhibit an appreciation of, a sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty and staff of many social, economic, cultural, gender, ideological, racial and ethnic backgrounds. Reporting to the Director of Advising Initiatives and Partnerships in UAA Advising the Path to UW Adviser will have the following responsibilities DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Prospective transfer student advising (50%) Advise prospective students in understanding academic options, degree requirements, and university policies and procedures. Travel to the Seattle Colleges two days a week to advise on-site. Partner with admissions to help prospective students understand the UW admissions process. Guide and support students in making informed choices, developing their academic identities, and crafting successful academic plans. Provide prospective student advising in multiple modalities including one-on-one, drop-in, group, and remote both at the University of Washington and onsite at partner institutions Current UW student advising (20%) Advise a diverse population of students including pre-major students, international students, pre-professional students, and low scholarship/at-risk students on academic options, degree requirements, and university policies using a multiple advising modalities such as one-on-one, drop-in, and group meetings. Support Advising & Orientation activities for new transfer and incoming freshman students through participation in presentations, workshops, and events for new students and parents. Create and run programming for new and current transfer students. Perform administrative management of advising work Support the goals and functions of the advising office through administrative tasks, support and coordination of events, basic projects, collaboration with partners across campus, and other duties as assigned. Supporting programming, logistics, and communications for the Path to UW program and other Washington State Community College partnerships (25%) Support Senior Path to UW Advisor in logistics and program planning for Path to UW events, workshops, and seminars. Manage Path to UW student communications and outreach Track and monitor student progress and participation and create data reports regarding student participation and progress. Professional Training and Development (5%) Attend on-campus and off-campus workshops, webinars and seminars, e.g. SafeZone, suicide prevention, NACADA, MyPlan training, advising special populations (veterans, first generation, etc.) Participate in committee work within UAA, with campus partners, or with professional organizations directly related to the position to support their strategic initiatives, mission and goals. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) and two years of advising, student counseling , student services, or related experience. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Excellent organizational and time-management skills, and superlative attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, and to collaborate effectively with people representing diverse perspectives, approaches, and job roles. Demonstrated familiarity with, and ability to adopt and implement diverse technology, communications and social media platforms and applications.to provide an empathic, yet professional and efficient Ability to appropriately manage sensitive information. Superlative ability approach to working with students from extremely diverse backgrounds and those with a spectrum of personal and academic challenges. Experience working with diverse student populations including students considered to be at-risk, low-scholarship, international students, or transfer students. Desired: Experience as a UW student or staff member. Experience with Access, Excel, EARS and UW SDB. Experience working in areas related to career counseling, and familiarity with career exploration and job search tools. Familiarity with contemporary concepts in student development.
